Blagoveshchenskaya Street

About

A paradise for lovers of detailed architectural photography. Blagoveshchenskaya Street is essentially an open-air museum of wooden architecture. It features many carved houses from the 19th to early 20th centuries. Here you will find all the elements of the “Vologda style”: ornate window frames with fine fretwork, lace-like cornices, decorative balconies, and shutters. One of the most beautiful houses is the Lace Makers’ House. In the 1910s, it belonged to K.I. Naumov, who bought and sold lace. Lace makers who came from afar stayed in his house — hence the name. Next to the Lace Makers’ House stands another example of the “Vologda style” — the House with Grapes. Grapes decorate the entrance doors of the building.
