Yaroslavl Museum-Reserve

About

The museum is located on the grounds of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery.
It houses the cathedral of the same name, the oldest in Yaroslavl, dating from the 16th century. Unique frescoes from that period are preserved inside.
The monastery is an ancient architectural ensemble surrounded by fortress walls. Apart from the main cathedral, it houses churches from various centuries, former clergy residences, a bell tower, and utility buildings, now housing museum exhibitions.
In the 18th century, a unique manuscript, the "Word of Igor's Campaign," was discovered on the monastery grounds, which gave rise to Russian literature. Unfortunately, it has not survived to the present day.
From October 1 to May 1, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral is closed to visitors to protect the frescoes from moisture.
