About
The building was once part of the Friedrichsburg Fortress. It was founded in 1657 by Elector Frederick William. In the 19th century, the fortress became part of Königsberg's defensive structures, though it was never used in military actions. In the early 20th century, the city authorities declared it outdated, demolished the fortress, leaving only the gate. During the Soviet period, the building deteriorated, though it was designated a historical monument in 1960. Restoration work began in the 21st century and was completed in 2011. The building is made of red-fired brick in the neo-Gothic style. Four round towers with crenellated parapets decorate the gates. Today, it houses a branch of the World Ocean Museum.
